deep conversation and deep-fried tortillas

buddy christsummer comes, and college students come home. i’ve been in the area for long enough to actually have made some friendships with some of them, so i can’t wait for them to return each may…i’m a cheese. i can’t help it. i hope i can challenge them and encourage them, but mostly i use them to keep MYSELF challenged and current…

anyway, i took this kid out to dinner the other day. we went to the best mexican place in buford, ga, restaurante calvillo. sopes asada con sour cream and other cosas. so we’re talking about music and sound and this and that, and he says, “so seriously what’s the deal with catholics being obsessed with the virgin mary and stuff?” a little bit out of the blue, but to the point. we talked about some of the possibilities, including what rd saunders said in his message on sunday. that led us into a more broad sweeping discussion of religion, church, spirituality, etc. how do you keep doing the good of the church without having it resemble business? and how can you do church without all the business…and still be able to afford (in money, people, etc.) what goodness of serving others costs… i don’t know that we really came to any conclusions, except that we both really still dislike the word “religion.” anyway, these college kids really do challenge me. i think that’s the point of all this. a little bit of deep thinking with your flavored agua and guacamole.
