actually, i guess the word “geek” has recently been applied strictly to computer people…but this post is more about general academic humor. so maybe another descriptive noun like “nerd” or “dork” would better suit me, as i sit and laugh outloud at my computer. i was searching for a “fact or fiction” game for my Impact group’s gathering tomorrow night, when i came across this random fact. apparently, in mississippi, it is illegal to teach fractions and decimals in public secondary schools. i know this is a little bit dated, but it’s pretty funny. and i don’t think all of the information in the article is factual…they’re just making fun of the people who made the decision to strike fractions and decimals from the math program. anyway, check out the article here, and have a good chuckle.
edit: it’s been brought to my attention that there is in fact no law in mississippi outlawing the teaching of fractions. i’m relieved. it came from a “fake legends” section of the website i was referencing. but the article is still funny. i guess it makes sense…it seemed a little too much like something you’d read in the onion. later.
