lessons from tera emerson

right after college, my first job was with an advertising agency called badertscher communications, in my old home town of marion, oh. shortly after I started there, they brought on a lady named tera emerson. (that’s not really her exact name…I changed it a little to protect her privacy…because so many people read this thing!!) nice enough lady. very nice, in fact. but also a very shrewd business person.

i clearly remember the unusual turn of events that surrounded her coming on with the company: when they initially offered her the position she declined. well apperantly they really wanted her, because to my recollection they reoffered her the job, this time with more pay and more flexibility. and of course she accepted.

she later referenced that scenario and told me that some of the best things she had, she had gotten them by learning to say “no.”

but the lesson breaks down there to some extent. in my case, if god is calling me to a place or a special role, i cannot say “no”… i can, but it is an act in futility. I know that if god tells me to do something, then it’s the best thing i could do. and yet i find myself resisting…wanting to take tera’s route. the route that helped her get some of the best things she had ever had…

any, make of that what you will. as for tera, i wouldn’t be very surprised to see her on the apprentice next season or something. that would be a hoot.
