today at kroger, as i was in the big cooler rearranging cucumbers and salad mixes and strawberries, i got to thinking about the not-so-bad arrangement i’ve got at kroger (also known as “my awesome job”). here are a few things that i thought of that are pretty good about working at kroger.
1. they pay me to be there. (it’s not a lot, but it’s more than zero.)
2. they play good music. (decent mix of jimi hendrix, doobie brothers, the beatles, james taylor, steve miller band, joe walsh…and the list goes on… unfortunately, the mix also includes such low points as gloria estefan, whitney houston, n*sync, etc…so it cancels itself out. another wrinkle in the plot is that there is not speaker in the cooler, where i spend most of my time. so when i step out of the cooler for a moment and hear a brief snippet of a random song, i step back into the cooler and have no choice but to sing/hum/whistle that very song until the next time i step back out of the cooler… so most of the time, it’s something cool like the eagles, or earth wind and fire…but the other day i heard myself singing “turn the beat around…”)
3. they give an employee discount. (i didn’t know about that until friday when i got a special kroger plus card with my employee status somehow embedded in the thing. peep this: i get ten percent off all kroger-brand products. i know that doesn’t see like much…and really it isn’t much, but it’s something. and as i said in number 1, “some” is more than “none.”)
4. um…i’m drawing a blank…
