how to feel miserable as an artist

i got this from my friend brad, who got it from bendpress.com. it’s written to artists, but most of the ideas apply to just about any creative/leadership role. (another possible title: “what not to do. underline all that apply.”)

1. constantly compare yourself to other artists.

2. talk to your family about what you do and expect them to cheer you on.

3. base the success of your entire career on one project.

4. stick to what you know.

5. undervalue your expertise.

6. let money dictate what you do.

7. bow to societal pressures.

8. only do work that your family would love.

9. do whatever the client/customer/gallery owner/patron/investor asks.

10. set unachievable/overwhelming goals. to be accomplished by tomorrow.

number five is the one that really struck me. i have trouble with that. which one applies to you?

  • yea man, number 1 and number 6 for sure. i always compare myself to how awesome someone else's art is , and i always say that i'll do "that" when i have the money for it. i'm still trying to become less insecure about myself. art makes me too vulnerable, which makes me insecure, ya know?
