crazy weekend.
1. i made a video promoting a big cookout and mocking friday the thirteenth’s superstitious value…and then friday the thirteenth mocked me right back with 2.5 inches of rain, accompanied by unbelievably close-together thunder and lightning. maybe i should be more superstitious… if that’s true, then i’m really in trouble, because i definitely smashed a two-sided hand mirror for use as a prop in the video…
2. i need to learn how to market to college-aged peeps. i thought i knew them well, but i have to keep relearning everything. that’s prob the way that really good leaders have to do it on a regular basis: learn how to connect with their people, and then re-evaluate the best way to connect, and then change all over again.
3. if you are a marion person in college, or college-aged, meet me at panera this thursday at 7:30pm for some coffee and discussion.
4. this sunday was “heritage weekend” at my church. that means that we look back at the past, revisit the roots, play more traditional music, etc. so, we played three hymnal songs today (with lyrics on the screens)…younger people thought it was okay, older people loved it. some non-traditional things about today: gretchen noticed that we used more video elements in today’s service than any normal “modern” service, i broke a string on my accoustic guitar at the last minute so i used my strat, i know for a fact that there were some totally un-churched people there today checking it out.
5. had an interesting chat with one of those un-churched peeps this afternoon about the music we sang. basically, it went like this: “i liked the music. especially the one song i knew, amazing grace. that first song we sang has some crazy vocabulary…i didn’t really get it. and i liked the way you played that other one [how great thou art]. i didn’t realize what that other song was until the chorus, cause it didn’t sound so old-people-ish.” you can leave mean comments if you want, but i’m just relaying what she said.
6. been listening to a cd by my hosts’ son ben lashey and a friend of his. it’s one of my favorite in a long time. check them out.
7. i had a fantastic father’s day today. gretchen, ella, and i we had dinner with our ohio family. dave cooked steak (that he raised in his own field), and grandpa lashey baked a black raspberry pie. (salad, potatos, ice cream, grilled onions, sauteed mushrooms, etc.) incredible. also, the last soda i drink until after i run the marathon in the fall. i missed my dad and my father-in-law today.
8. vacation bible school starts tomorrow, and i got roped into wearing a rainbow wig and a florescent green lab coat. i’ll try to post pics.
9. my dog is a psycho.
10. my wife is hot.
11. i’m going to bed.

Adam….The music Sunday was great and obviously from what you said the unchurched peep said to you, you are doing what you were hired to do ! awsome work.. Even playing the traditional hymn with the today sound is working, keep it up, it is reaching them ! I know I love it. The peeps need to hear the words to the old hymns too. I love what you do with it. Every Sunday is definately an adverture waiting to unfold with you around. You keep us on our toes.
