on surveys and basements

today was going to be a great day, with a lazy beginning, a productive middle, and a peaceful ending. i came downstairs at around nine o’clock, and we were planning on having breakfast and then getting everything ready for our vacation with gretchen’s family. i was about to whip up some pancakes when i thought, “i’ll run downstairs first and switch the laundry over for gretchen real quick.” so on my way down the stairs, i see something strange on the scrap piece of carpet that sits at the bottom of the stairwell: a strange sort of shadow that seems to run along the edge that faces the inside of the house, that actually looked a little bit more like water that had soaked into the carpet… huh uh… no way… …ahcrap… sure enough, to my chagrin, i find the majority of my basement flooded with water! almost two inches in some places.

the culprit was a sump pump that had repositioned itself against the wall of the pit, not allowing the drain trigger to move properly. so the pump just didn’t turn on. thank god we have most of our stuff in plastic bins, and the stuff that did get wet was mostly stuff that wasn’t really all that important. the floor slopes some, and so most of the standing water was right in the middle of the floor, not against the walls where our stuff is piled. and i just happened to decide to go down there and move the laundry along before cooking and eating breakfast. what if i hadn’t done that? the water would no doubt have ruined a lot more stuff, and would’ve taken a lot longer to get pumped out and cleaned up. so it could have been a whole lot worse than it was.

that being said, the whole rest of my day (minus a short nap and a holiday get-together this evening) was spent taking care of that basement. our living and dining rooms are full of things that i rescued from the flood, and the place is a disaster. to top it off, i’m taking gretchen to indiana tomorrow for her brother’s college graduation, and then i’m meeting them all on sunday for vacation…and the house is a wreck. blah.

all that to say, there is no survey for tomorrow. no fancy embedded christmas songs to play and enjoy. no worthless question to answer. none of that. if you didn’t reply to this morning’s question, or check out the music i posted, you should do that. there’s some good stuff down there.

i’ll try to get a new one posted for sunday, so check back.

until then, stay dry
