this post could be alternatively entitled “what i learned from the longest, most drawn-out, most depressing small group bible study series of all time.” whichever title you prefer. go with that one.
so i saw some cool images on rob bell’s twitpic page that reminded me of this. he posted them 39 days ago. i don’t know where he took them.
…
n. e. wayz. here is the most valuable thing that i learned from my group’s study of the book of job. sometimes life on this planet just sucks. you think you’re doing the right thing, but stuff keeps going wrong for you. this or that dilemma keeps arising and getting you down. if you were a cork board, you’d feel like you had a bunch of thumb tacks stuck haphazardly into every available inch of you.

when you have friends or loved ones around you in those moments, sometimes it feels better, but not always. they may be able to offer you a somewhat bigger perspective, that may lend some order to the situation. but it still doesn’t feel good. a few months or years out we may be able to look back and see some nice, even rows, and some pretty colors. and maybe it won’t hurt quite as much as it did before.

but in our limited minds with limited understanding and limited perspective, it’s still thumb tacks. no matter how much we want to see the big picture, most of the time the closest we can get is letting go and enjoying the variety of colors and patterns within a life that seems – in spite of the even rows – like total chaos. only the artist/the story teller/the composer/the thumb tack pusher/the one in charge/the huge guy with the way-zoomed-out perspective can see the BIG picture. and he’s using us (our poor thumb-tacked cork board lives) to create a beautiful, cohesive, creative work of art.

ever felt like that cork board? the artist has something great in the works if you’ll just hold on.
