i’ve got this real sharp pain in my neck. it’s on the right side, and it goes from the middle of my shoulder up to the middle of my neck. it was unbearable wednesday night and yesterday morning…until i went to visit my chiropractor friend dr. alonzo borja, in buford. it’s still a little tight and tender, but it’s way better than it was. i’m going back tomorrow morning for another adjustment.

anyway, chiropractic medicine has always has a bit of an “alternative medicine” rap in the medical field. but what he did yesterday was just weird. besides your customary chiropractor things (like “cracking” my neck and applying pressure to sore spots), he put these glass suction cups on my neck and shoulder and pumped the air out of them…and it was pretty intense. apparently, it’s supposed to stimulate the cells in that area to reproduce faster and whatnot, by bringing blood to the surface. (my korean friend tommy swears by it…he’s actually got his own set at home. i was with him when he bought them…and they’re not cheap.) well, bring blood to the surface it did, folks. i don’t really know if it is helping or not, but the hickies left on my neck and shoulder sure do make for great conversation starters… (in the grocery store, among friends, at my daughter’s birthday party…believe me, it’s not at all awkward…)

anyway, here’s the weird, wild stuff. this image was not doctored in photoshop or anything else.

honestly, folks, I’m not dissing…especially after the nice post he wrote about me the other day. the reason i’m posting this is that it is something that i would totally do.

you know what they say: life is a cookie, and then you eat it. i don’t know if they really say that or not, but that’s what came to mind when i saw this. my friend jason did an art show up in ohio and included portraits of some of the guys…with cookies on them. you can call it weird if you want, and jason would probably take that as a compliment. and these portraits are pretty big, too. look at how small the fig newtons look on the left side. where in the world will i hang something that big (that my wife will allow…)? and have the cookies been preserved by any kind of coating, or are they just gonna get stale and fall off eventually? “that’s all part of it, buddy,” i can hear jason saying right now.

n e wayz, just thought i’d share this with y’all.

edit: jason just emailed me the photo that was the “inspiration” for this portrait. if you ask me, it’s a work of art in itself!

when i was at fusion church, we did a series called “drought” that paralleled spiritual dryness with the drastic lack of precipitation we had in georgia at the time. when we were planning it, pastor tony kept saying, “i want tumbleweeds on stage. i want a huge tumbleweed.”

i jokingly said, “we could just have my parents (who live in the desert in california) go out and pick some up, and they could ship them to us.” little did i know how right i was. here is a picture i took of a huge tumbleweed while i was out there over the holiday season. if you look at the fenced in yard of the house on the left, you can see a bajillion more. this one’s for tony mccollum:
